About Dr. Jose Antonio
Dr. Jose Antonio (Tony) Marquez graduated from Ysleta High School and joined the US Navy shortly thereafter. After boot camp at Camp Nimitz in San Diego he was cross-trained as an engineering draftsman and quartermaster at a CB battalion school. He was then assigned to Pacific Submarine Squadron One in San Diego where he served as a draftsman on the USS Nereus, AS-17, a submarine repair ship and as a quartermaster aboard the USS Remora, SS487, a diesel-powered attack submarine.
Upon his honorable discharge he attended Texas Western College in 1960 while working for El Paso Water Utilities as a draftsman. His major was metallurgical engineering and he graduated in the summer of 1966 with a 4.0 GPA in his major, enabling him to get a full scholarship to MIT for his graduate studies, becoming the first Hispanic to go to MIT from El Paso on a full scholarship. After obtaining his MS at MIT in 1968 he was recruited by Exxon to work at an oil refinery in Baytown, TX.
Wanting to return to El Paso, he studied the pre-requisites at Pasadena Community College and enrolled at U Texas Dental School-Houston in 1970, graduating in the top 10% in 1974. He has practiced general dentistry for 42 years. In 1999, while practicing dentistry full-time, he obtained his PhD in materials science and engineering at UTEP with a 3.9 GPA. His dissertation was published in a distinguished national journal and earned him the Gold Nugget Award for engineering because of his pioneering discoveries. He was trained to place implants and bone grafts beginning in 2009 and is still placing them.
He is married to the former Maria Rosa Ortiz from Mayaguez, Puerto Rico and has two daughters and a son, plus four granddaughters and three grandsons.
